21 Days Until Samhuinn--World Contact Day Groovie Ghoulies

Today Sacramento Tomorrow The World!
With the Groovie Ghoulies everyday is Halloween. Chuck Berry and the Ramones meet the dark side, maybe on an episode of Scooby Doo. Kepi, his wife Roach, and Wendy conspire as punk rock cheerleaders for extraterrestrial invasion here. It's all good fun here.

Not all songs are explicitly macabre, but as you can see in the liner notes, the otherworldly and supernatural themes are implied. The disc starts out with a public service announcement from the invading aliens. Then its right into a nifty Ramones styled version of Neil Diamond's Hello Again. With songs like Running With Bigfoot, 50,000 Spaceships (Watching Over Me) & When The Kids Go Go Go Crazy you can't help but smile. Ghoulies Are Go!! is a perfect Saturday morning cartoon theme which hits you as though you polished of 10 bowls of Captain Crunch cereal. They also do an okay sloppy version of A New England by Billy Bragg.

A lot of silly silly fun, as are their many other albums, many of them on the esteemed label Lookout!!
It seems like after some financial difficulties, the label that helped introduce us all to Green Day and Mr T Experience is up and running again. Hopefully many of these great records will be back in print, and maybe we will be introduced to some more great punk pop. Unfortunately the Ghoulies split up in 2007 as a result of a Kepi-Roach divorce, but they put out a lot of great Halloween music in their day for us to enjoy.
